Jakarta - On Sunday, November 27, 2011, people with disabilities held a celebration at Pejaten Village. Many exciting performances were presented at the event. These included a performance by Miss Deaf World 2011, Surakarta gamelan by the visually impaired, Diferensia Band (comprising visually impaired and physically disabled members), singing in sign language by the deaf and mute, photography by a physically disabled individual (who does not have palms), a magic show by the visually impaired, and other equally captivating performances.
However, the most prominent of all performances was a musical drama played by 78 individuals with various disabilities, consisting of 23 visually impaired, 30 deaf/mute, 15 physically disabled, 8 intellectually disabled, and 1 autistic person, hailing from the islands of Java, Sumatra, and Bali. This drama, titled "Sang Muriang," was performed throughout the event, interspersed with other performances during each act change.
Amidst the festivities, representatives from each disability group also set up exhibition booths. Each booth was staffed by its respective representative: Ms. Farida from YPAC, representing the physically disabled; Ms. Tasya from SOINA, an Olympic organization that facilitates intellectually disabled children's participation in various sports events, especially abroad; Mitut, who represented autistic children; and Ms.
Revita, representing the Sehjira Foundation. Kartunet itself, acting as a representative for the visually impaired at the event, opened a technology booth there. We showcased accessible technology tools for the visually impaired, such as talking watches, Braille watches, talking calculators, color detectors, Braille writing devices, and accessible digital recorders.
Additionally, we presented an accessible game for the visually impaired: an accessible Rubik's Cube. To attract visitors, we demonstrated accessible audio games that can be played on computers, such as Top Speed, Crazy Dark, and Hunter. Furthermore, we played the Kartunet jingle, which is set to be officially launched soon. But equally important, we demonstrated screen readers so that visitors would understand that the visually impaired are also capable of competing in an inclusive society, especially in education and employment.
