Final Fantasy is one of the most iconic, influential, and legendary role-playing game (RPG) video game franchises in the world. Its history began in the mid-1980s, an era when the video game industry was seeking new directions and competition among developers was fierce. At that time, a Japanese video game development company called Square was on the verge of bankruptcy because several of their game releases failed to compete in the market. Hironobu Sakaguchi, one of the company's key creators, was frustrated with this situation and decided to stake everything on creating one last large-scale game project. He had even planned to leave the video game industry and return to college if this project failed. Because he thought this would be the final fantasy work of his career, he named the game Final Fantasy. Released in 1987 for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) console, the game turned out to be a massive hit. The financial and critical success of this game not only saved Square from bankruptcy but also marked the beginning of a global pop-culture phenomenon.

Following the success of the first installment, Square continued to release sequels with a unique characteristic that would later become the franchise's hallmark. Instead of continuing the same story sequentially, each main Final Fantasy installment always introduces an entirely new world, cast of characters, story themes, and gameplay system, granting unlimited creative freedom to its developers.

For loyal fans of role-playing video games or RPGs, the first six Final Fantasy installments—spanning from the 8-bit NES era to the 16-bit SNES—hold a very special place. These classic games are the solid foundation that built Square Enix's formidable reputation in the modern entertainment industry, introducing dramatic storytelling mechanics and continuously evolving combat systems.

One of the most significant appeals of the Final Fantasy franchise is the creative freedom granted to its developers. Each main Final Fantasy installment always introduces an entirely new world, cast of characters, story themes, and gameplay system, providing unlimited creative freedom to its developers.

To preserve this valuable legacy, unify its aesthetics, and introduce it to new generations in the most ideal way, Square Enix released an ambitious project called Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. This project brings Final Fantasy I through Final Fantasy VI back into a modern format that is uniform, beautiful, and much more accessible to today's players across computers, modern consoles, and mobile devices.

One of the most significant appeals of this version is the meticulously executed complete overhaul of its visuals and audio. Graphically, the games retain the charm of two-dimensional (2D) pixel art, which is the soul and hallmark of the classic console era. However, these graphics have been entirely redrawn to appear much sharper, feature dynamic environmental details, and boast a richer color composition when played on today's high-resolution screens.

Turning to the audio, all the iconic music from these six games—previously limited by the capabilities of older console hardware—has been magnificently re-arranged. Utilizing real orchestral instruments, this music arrangement process was directly led and supervised by the legendary composer who created these songs, Nobuo Uematsu.

But what about visually impaired gamers? Can they also enjoy Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster and embark on adventures? Unfortunately, the visual beauty and audio grandeur of Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster cannot be enjoyed by everyone, especially visually impaired individuals. By default, these six installments cannot be played by visually impaired gamers because the operating system's built-in screen reader software cannot interact with the menu codes, dialogue text, and action options available within the game's interface.

Recognizing this gap, the dedicated gaming community did not remain silent. Mod creators (modders) worked tirelessly to deconstruct the game's system and create a special mod or modification designed to allow third-party screen readers to capture text and interact with the game's interface. Thanks to this brilliant community initiative, visually impaired individuals finally have the opportunity to play and experience the epic stories of these six classic Final Fantasy installments.

Although this community-made mod greatly helps screen readers interact with menus and various in-game options, the reality on the ground shows that many technical shortcomings still exist. One major issue frequently encountered is that many objects within the game world are still named with random variable codes from the game engine, rather than their actual item names, potentially causing confusion for users.

Furthermore, in some mod versions for different Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster installments, technical bugs are still very common. Examples include several important menus that are still not read by screen readers, and menu cursors that automatically jump and move on their own every few seconds, which can make it difficult for users to navigate the game world.
