Kartunet remains committed to providing a platform that is not only informative but also truly accessible to all segments of the disability community in Indonesia. As part of this commitment, we are proud to introduce a major update to Avika — Kartunet's WhatsApp-based virtual assistant — specifically for the manuscript submission feature for contributing writers. This update, which we call Avika 2.0 Manuscript Submission System, brings a series of innovations specifically designed to be more intuitive, more secure, and more user-friendly for visually impaired users and writers from diverse backgrounds.
Background: Why Did the Manuscript Submission System Need an Update?
Previously, writers who wished to contribute articles to Kartunet via WhatsApp Avika faced significant limitations. Documents submitted, such as Word (.docx) or PDF files, were automatically saved as drafts without any preview or confirmation process from the writer. This meant that if there were errors in the content — especially if the manuscript was the result of an automatically transcribed voice recording — it would already be sent to the Editorial desk without the writer having a chance to edit it first.
This situation was not ideal. The Kartunet Editorial Team believes that the authenticity and quality of writing must be maintained from its source — that is, from the writer's own hands. Therefore, we rebuilt the entire manuscript submission workflow from the ground up, with a new philosophy: "The Editorial Team only accepts clean, confirmed, and writer-approved submissions."
"I want the AI to extract the writing, then display it as a preview to the user before it's sent. The Editorial Team only needs to receive clean writing that matches the writer's intent. The AI also should not change the writing style or content — its job is only to tidy up the format, not to rewrite."
— Dimas P. Muharam, Initiator & Co-founder of Kartunet
What's New in Avika 2.0 for the Manuscript Submission Feature?
1. Mandatory Preview Before Sending
This is the most fundamental change. Now, no manuscript can directly enter the Editorial system without going through the Preview stage. Whether the manuscript is typed incrementally via chat, sent via voice recording, or uploaded as a document file — all must pass through the same gate: the writer must view, review, and give approval before the manuscript is officially submitted.
2. Hybrid AI Editor That Preserves Writing Authenticity
Avika 2.0 uses a smart Hybrid AI architecture — combining Cloudflare's Llama 3.1 model for normal-sized manuscripts, with Google's Gemini 2.5 Flash as a backup for very long manuscripts. Most importantly, this AI Editor does not alter the writer's original style, meaning, or word choices. Its sole task is to clean up junk characters from document formats (such as RTF markup codes or strange characters from PDFs) and structure the text into clean HTML format. Even minor intentional typos are left intact, as they are part of the writer's authentic voice.
3. Interactive Revisions with Voice or Text Commands
On the Preview page, the option to Revise with AI is available. If the writer feels a part needs improvement, simply type instructions in everyday language — for example, "Please change the title to Inspirational Journey" or "Make the opening sentence of the first paragraph more casual." The AI Editor will process the command and display an updated manuscript Preview. This process can be repeated multiple times until the writer is completely satisfied.
4. Automatic Anti-Spam and Anti-Duplication Protection
To protect the Editorial Team, Avika 2.0 is now equipped with two layers of automatic protection: a maximum limit of three manuscripts in the review queue per writer, and a duplicate title detector that prevents accidental double submissions.
5. Cancel Submission and Delete Draft Features
If a writer wishes to withdraw a manuscript that has already been submitted, it can now be done directly from WhatsApp via the View Drafts menu. After confirmation, the manuscript will be permanently deleted from the Editorial system.
6. Writing Length Guidance for SEO
Each time a writer submits a piece of manuscript, Avika automatically counts the words and provides friendly advice — whether the manuscript length is ideal (minimum 500 words) or still needs to be extended. This is merely advice, not a limitation.
Complete Tutorial: How to Use the Manuscript Submission Feature in Avika (Menu 5)
The following guide is designed to be easily understood by all users, including those using screen reader applications like TalkBack on Android or VoiceOver on iPhone. Each step only requires a reply in the form of a number or short text that is friendly for screen reader navigation.
Initial Steps: Entering the Manuscript Submission Menu
- Open WhatsApp and send a message to Avika Kartunet's official number.
- Type the number 99 to bring up the Main Menu, then type the number 5 to enter the Manuscript Submission feature.
- Avika will detect whether your WhatsApp number is already registered as a writer or not.
Part A: Writer Profile Registration (For New Writers)
If your number is not yet registered, Avika will guide you through creating a new writer profile. This process is done only once, and all steps are automatic without needing to fill out a form on a website.
- Enter your active Email Address. Avika will send an OTP verification code to that email.
- Enter the 6-digit OTP Code received in the email (also check the Spam folder if it's not in the Inbox).
- Type your Pen Name or full name you wish to display below each of your articles.
- Type a Short Biography (maximum 2 sentences) that will be displayed on your profile and below each of your articles.
- Type your LinkedIn link or social media (optional). If you want to skip this step, type a hyphen (-) or the word SKIP.
Once the profile is successfully created, Avika will immediately invite you to start writing your first manuscript.
Part B: Three Ways to Submit a Manuscript
After entering the Writer Menu, select number 1 for New Submission. You will be asked to fill in the title first.
Method 1: Writing Directly via Chat (Incremental Text)
This method is most suitable for writers who want to type their manuscripts directly from WhatsApp, either from a phone or computer.
- Type the Title of your article, then send.
- Select the Category by typing the corresponding number from the list Avika displays.
- Start sending the content of the article. You can send it in several consecutive messages — for example, one message for one paragraph or one section. Avika will always reply with a confirmation:
"Text saved (Part 1). Current word count: 120. Please send the next paragraph..." - After the entire article has been sent, type the word DONE to inform Avika that the manuscript is complete.
- Avika will process your manuscript with AI and display the Manuscript Preview.
Method 2: Sending a Voice Message
This method is very helpful for writers who are more comfortable speaking than typing, including users with motor impairments or visually impaired individuals who wish to dictate their writing orally.
- After the Category selection stage, press the record button in WhatsApp and start speaking to dictate the content of your article.
- Avika will automatically transcribe your voice recording into text, then display the result:
"Avika heard: [transcribed text]" - The transcribed result is immediately added to the manuscript and can be supplemented with subsequent recordings or text.
- Type DONE if all parts have been recorded.
- At the Preview stage, use the Revise with AI option if there are incorrect words from the transcription that need correction.
Method 3: Uploading a Document File
This method is most practical if the manuscript has been previously written on another device in Word, PDF, or plain text format.
- Make sure you have entered the Manuscript Submission feature (Menu 5) and Avika recognizes you as a registered writer.
- In WhatsApp, attach your document file. Supported formats: .docx (Microsoft Word), .doc, .pdf, .txt, and .rtf.
- Avika will extract all text from the document. Note: your original file is not stored on Kartunet's server — only the text is processed, so your privacy remains protected.
- Avika will display a temporary title detected from the file name or the first sentence of the document, then ask you to select a Category.
- After selecting a category, Avika immediately displays the Manuscript Preview for review before sending it to the Editorial Team.
Part C: Manuscript Preview and Submission Confirmation
After the manuscript is finished writing or uploaded by any method, Avika will always display the Manuscript Preview page containing:
- Manuscript title
- Selected category
- Snippet of the manuscript content (first 250 characters)
- Word count and SEO tips (whether it has reached the minimum of 500 words or not)
From this page, you have three options:
- Type 1 — SEND TO EDITORIAL. The manuscript will immediately go to the Kartunet Editorial desk with Draft status for review before publication.
- Type 2 — REVISE WITH AI. You will be asked to type or record revision instructions. Examples: "Change the title to A Story from Behind the Silence" or "Shorten the third paragraph." The AI will process and re-display the preview.
- Type 0 — CANCEL. The writing session is canceled without saving anything.
Part D: Viewing and Managing Manuscript Drafts
After the manuscript is sent to the Editorial Team, you can monitor its status at any time.
- From the Writer Menu, type the number 3 to enter View Drafts and Article Status.
- Avika will display a list of your manuscripts that are still in Draft, Under Review, or Scheduled for Publication status.
- If there is more than one draft, type 2 to view the next manuscript and 1 to return to the previous manuscript.
- If you want to cancel the submission of a draft, type 3 while viewing that draft. Avika will ask for confirmation:
"Are you sure you want to delete the draft titled [Title]? This action is permanent and cannot be undone."
Type 1 to confirm deletion, or 0 to cancel. - Type 0 at any time to return to the Writer Menu.
Accessibility Tips for Screen Reader Users
- Single-digit navigation: All options at each step use single digits (1, 2, 3, 0) making them easy to access with one tap without having to navigate through a lot of text.
- Universal keyword: Type the number 99 at any time to return to Avika's Main Menu and start a new session.
- Skip optional steps: For fields that are not mandatory (such as social media when registering or editing a profile), simply type a hyphen (-) or the word SKIP to proceed to the next step without changing existing data.
- Confirmation messages are always present: Every important action — from saving paragraphs, selecting categories, to deleting drafts — is always followed by a confirmation message from Avika so you know your action has been successfully processed.
- No time limit: The writing session will not end due to timeout. You can submit manuscripts incrementally, even if there are long pauses between paragraph submissions.
Supporting Accessibility as a Top Priority
The entire workflow above is designed with visually impaired users who rely on screen readers in mind. The guide text at each step is made short, clear, and free of confusing characters when read verbally. There are no random capital letters, no distracting decorative symbols, and no browser-based forms that require complex navigation.
Kartunet believes that good technology is technology that can be used by everyone without exception — including writers with visual disabilities who want to voice their experiences to the world.
