Kartunet - The digital era has opened up vast career opportunities for visually impaired individuals, far beyond the conventional jobs that have long been stigmatized by society. The technology industry (IT), startups, and even international companies are now increasingly inclusive and adopting remote work systems. However, to break into the competition in this industry, relying solely on formal diplomas is not enough. Visually impaired individuals are required to possess practical skills, problem-solving abilities, and strong personal branding.

1. Shifting from Diplomas to Portfolios of Work

In tech company recruitment, track records or portfolios often serve as the primary benchmark evaluated by recruiters. This is exemplified by Putri, a visually impaired individual who successfully built a career as a Test Automation Engineer and works remotely.

Building personal branding in the digital world means showing the public (and potential employers) what we are capable of creating. Instead of merely listing computer skills on a Curriculum Vitae (CV), visually impaired individuals interested in programming or content writing can start showcasing their work on professional platforms like LinkedIn or code repositories like GitHub. This portfolio serves as tangible proof (show, don't just tell) that visual impairment is not an obstacle to producing functional digital products.

2. Mastering Industry Collaboration Standards (Git and Google Workspace)

A common mistake in computer training for the visually impaired is focusing only on basic Microsoft Word proficiency and internet browsing. However, current industry standards demand real-time collaboration skills. Gagah, a visually impaired IT practitioner, emphasizes the urgency of mastering digital workspace services like Google Workspace (Google Docs and Google Sheets) because the majority of modern companies now use these platforms for teamwork.

For those who want to delve into programming languages (coding), the fastest way to learn is by reading and modifying existing code examples. Therefore, mastering Git and navigating the GitHub platform becomes an essential skill. By mastering these collaboration tools, visually impaired workers can prove that they can work in a harmonious rhythm (tandem) with sighted colleagues without complicating the team's workflow.

3. Pre-Employment Soft Skills: Preparing Mentally for the Workplace

Proficient technical skills (hard skills) will be in vain if not balanced with soft skills (soft skills) and mental resilience. Reksya, founder of the Inviart tech community, highlights that mental preparedness remains one of the main challenges for visually impaired individuals entering the professional world. Stigma from the surrounding environment sometimes makes visually impaired people easily feel inferior or, conversely, too quickly satisfied.

To address this, the Inviart community even initiated a Blind Meditation program to build the mental resilience of its members. In the workplace, visually impaired individuals must possess high resilience: daring to ask questions, proactively seeking independent solutions (e.g., using AI as an assistant when colleagues are busy), and being ready to accept evaluations. This attitude of continuous learning and adaptation is what shapes a brilliant reputation or personal branding in the eyes of superiors.

4. Support for Inclusive Employment Policies

Beyond self-preparation, the state has actually laid the legal groundwork to ensure a fair job market. Law Number 8 of 2016 has mandated the right to work for persons with disabilities. More technically, Government Regulation Number 60 of 2020 requires every region to have a Disability Service Unit (ULD) for Employment, tasked with providing information and assistance, as well as facilitating the provision of Reasonable Accommodation in the workplace.

With this legal guarantee, private companies and government agencies no longer have a reason to reject competent disabled candidates. The primary task for visually impaired individuals now is to continuously sharpen their "spurs" so that when employment opportunities arise, they are ready to prove their best capabilities.

Conclusion

The technology industry is an ecosystem based on meritocracy—where abilities and achievements are valued more than mere physical background. By strategically building a solid digital portfolio, mastering current collaboration platforms, and forging a resilient mindset, visually impaired workers can break barriers and carve out successful professional careers in the digital age.
