Bandung, Kartunet.com - In the educational process, children with low vision are prepared to be independent in their daily activities and to integrate into their environment. It is also hoped that they can adapt to their surroundings. Thus, they can contribute to nation-building. One of the skills that children with low vision can master is writing.

Students with low vision use the same equipment as typically sighted students, such as crayons, ballpoint pens, pens, pencils, chalk, markers of various sizes and types, and so on.

The difference lies only in the size and thickness of the writing required for it to be legible. Thus, writing equipment for students with low vision can be found in general bookstores and stationery shops. Dark-colored writing tools and paper with thick lines. The combination of large symbols and paper with contrasting, thick lines will provide readiness and ease for students with low vision in writing.

Typing is very important for students with low vision; this skill is an inseparable part of the writing program to determine success in tests and grade promotion. It is advisable to start using a standard typewriter as early as 3rd grade of elementary school. Typing is indeed faster and more legible than handwriting. Operating a typewriter and teaching it to students with low vision is no different from what sighted students learn.

Many students learn to type by reading large-print books. Nowadays, typing can be done directly using computer devices, which will make it easier for children to participate in teaching and learning activities in general schools.

Therefore, the writing skills program for students with low vision must have two objectives:

1)             Students with low vision can use writing equipment according to their needs.

2)             Students with low vision can skillfully use both traditional and modern (computer) typing methods effectively. (Danu)
