Lamellar Keratoplasty is a surgical procedure that replaces damaged parts while preserving healthy tissue. It can be applied to individuals of all ages who have experienced corneal damage. This technique differs from older methods as it carries a lower risk of causing injury (this is because when attaching the donor cornea, stitches are not used; instead, an air bubble, a type of air pocket that can perfectly adhere to the cornea and will disappear within 5 days post-surgery, is utilized), and it does not require nearly a year for the process. The commonly used corneal transplantation technique is penetrating keratoplasty, which involves replacing all layers of the patient's cornea with a donor cornea. This older technique carries a higher risk of rejection of the new cornea and requires a long recovery period. Aldave stated, "The failure rate is also significantly lower." The difficulty level of corneal transplants in children tends to be higher because their corneal thickness is different from adults, being about half. Many people now seek corneal transplants due to the need for vision optimization, especially those whose professions rely on their eyes, so the function of the transplant is not only for blindness but also for optimization. Individuals suffering from blindness (visually impaired) due to corneal damage require transplantation, specifically corneal grafting, to restore their vision. Corneal blindness occurs almost daily, usually due to individuals experiencing accidents, not being disciplined in using contact lenses, and congenital corneal defects. To undergo Lamellar Keratoplasty, there's no need to go abroad, as Indonesia has started implementing it, with one such facility being the Jakarta Eye Center. The implementation of Lamellar Keratoplasty began around 2008; however, not many Indonesian ophthalmologists have mastered the technique. Dr. Tjahjono D Gondhowiardjo SpM PhD, Chairman of the Indonesian College of Ophthalmology (KOI), stated during the Pre Meeting Cornea press conference, "Only about 5 Indonesian ophthalmologists can perform it." Note: One eye disease that might be curable by God's will is Glaucoma, because according to information from my grandmother, her sibling and ancestors who suffered from Glaucoma recovered after undergoing corneal surgery.
