Today we celebrate Indonesia's independence. However, for some citizens, individuals with mental disabilities, their freedom is stripped away through confinement in social care homes that resemble prisons.   The forced confinement of individuals with disabilities in social care homes is called institutionalization. Remember, as long as anyone's freedom is denied through restrictive institutional care, true independence has not been achieved.   There is no other way to liberate those who are confined than by freeing them from their confinement. The effort to transform the imprisoning system of institutional care into one that allows individuals with disabilities to live freely is called Deinstitutionalization.   Deinstitutionalization is not merely a discourse; it is an alternative to liberate our brothers and sisters from a system that traps them in helplessness.   Let us unite to end practices that betray humanitarian values and ensure that independence is the right of every individual, without exception.   Head of the Healthy Mind Association: Yeni Rosa Damayanti
