When we visit a blog or website, it's very common to find advertisements embedded on every page. These ads can be banners or plain text ads. Some of us disregard these ads because they are irrelevant to what we're looking for, or conversely, some feel helped by ads that align with our goals. However, generally, ads placed on a blog or website already have a specific system to make them as relevant as possible to the blog/website's content. Perhaps for us visitors, the question arises: why do these website owners place ads? In this article, we will discuss the reasons why website owners place ads on their pages and what we, as visitors to these websites/blogs, should do.
Before going further, I will introduce the ads themselves that are placed on website/blog pages. The advertising product commonly found on website/blog pages is called a pay-per-click program. So, every time a visitor clicks on an ad, the website owner will be paid a certain amount of money. Because the payment system is based on each click, this program is called pay-per-click.
There are many pay-per-click advertising service providers that allow website owners to display ads from their services. One of the most well-known is Google AdSense. This pay-per-click site offers a significant payout for each ad clicked by a visitor. It can amount to several dollars for each ad clicked by a website/blog visitor. Not to be outdone, Indonesian web owners also provide pay-per-click advertising services. In my article titled 'Pay-Per-Click Programs from Indonesia,' these sites also offer quite decent payments to ad publishers.
As explained above, we now know that ads placed by website/blog owners generate revenue when clicked by visitors. This is their primary reason for placing ads. To operate, a website requires subscription fees over time. A website has two main components: hosting and domain. Hosting is where the web owner stores website files, while a domain is the address we type when visiting the site. All these aspects require subscription fees, which depend on the website's capacity. The larger the capacity, the more expensive the subscription fee.
The second reason is to ensure content quality. Some web owners place ads to enrich their website/blog content. It's not just about posts or text pages. It can also include banner ads that enhance the website/blog's appearance. Thus, in addition to reading the content, visitors can also click on ads relevant to the content, thereby helping visitors who need those ads.
So, what should we do as visitors to our favorite websites/blogs? We now know that web owners need funds for hosting and domain subscriptions. With their knowledge and experience, web owners share it through their websites/blogs. Whether consciously or not, we have been helped to some extent by this sharing of knowledge and experience. For example, when we are looking for material for school or college, we might quote parts from these websites/blogs. Or perhaps we enjoy reading literary works and regularly visit a site that might also display pay-per-click ads. If considered logically and ethically, it is only right that we help these web owners by clicking on one or two of the displayed ads. Just one or two clicks from us can be very significant for the sustainability of that website/blog.
Perhaps it crosses our minds, after learning that clicked ads pay the web owner, 'Why should we click if it only benefits them?' Again, there is no compulsion from web owners for us to click their ads. This is merely a small gesture of gratitude for what we have gained. Consider it a thank you to these web owners. Just like when we help others sincerely, we don't expect payment or any return. With a thank you, we feel valued and appreciated for what we have done. So, show appreciation for the websites/blogs we visit by clicking one or two ads there. Remember, netizens, it means a great deal to them.
