Jakarta, Kartunet - Limitations are no barrier for persons with disabilities to pursue the highest levels of education. Proof of this is that at least 15 people in Indonesia have already earned doctorates. This was stated by Nahar, Director of Social Rehabilitation for Persons with Disabilities at the Ministry of Social Affairs, at the Ministry's office in Jakarta, (4/11).
"Some work as lecturers, entrepreneurs, and social activists," he revealed. Quoted from Aktual.co, the disabled individuals who have received their doctorates include Ika Ismurdiawati, Irwanto, Didi Tarsidi, Harry, Saharudin Daming, Saleh, and Basri Nursikumbang. They are individuals with polio, hearing impairments, visual impairments, and physical disabilities.
"Irwanto has now earned the title of professor. He uses a wheelchair daily due to polio," he added. According to Nahar, these disabled individuals who have earned professorships and doctorates can serve as motivators for other persons with disabilities to achieve success. This is because these doctors are proof that persons with disabilities can be successful and knowledgeable.
"These doctors serve as evidence that persons with disabilities can work and achieve their aspirations," he further stated. He also added that every December 3rd, the Ministry of Social Affairs presents awards to organizations that have contributed to persons with disabilities.
"Awards are prepared for individuals and social organizations that care about persons with disabilities. However, to date, only a few organizations have shown concern for disability issues," he continued. Based on the socio-economic survey results from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there were 6,008,661 persons with disabilities in 2012.
"The actual number is likely higher than that," he concluded. The increasing number of disabled individuals who are able to achieve success not only serves as encouragement for their peers but also as proof to society that limitations are not a barrier. The government, private sector, and society in general should begin to broaden their perspectives to provide opportunities for them to contribute within the community.
