Jakarta - The political climate in the country is heating up with the impending announcement by the President of a cabinet reshuffle for the second United Indonesia Cabinet. A wide array of comments and opinions have circulated regarding it. Some suggest the reshuffle aims to enhance the performance of cabinet ministers. However, many others contend that the upcoming overhaul is merely a political maneuver for image-building.
We are already aware of this. Various scandals have plagued several ministries, such as those at the Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration (KEMENAKERTRANS) or the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KEMENPORA). These cases implicated several sitting cabinet ministers, naturally jeopardizing the image of the President's administration as the leader and appointing authority for these ministers. To save face, there seemed to be no alternative but to "uproot" the source of these issues.
Interestingly, even before the reshuffle announcement has been made, many individuals are already busy making predictions: who will be removed from their posts and who will replace them. The media, unwilling to miss this valuable moment, has diligently invited political experts and various figures from specific political parties, both those allied with the government and those outside the coalition. A common question posed by the media is,
“Are you prepared if a minister from your party is removed from their cabinet position?” Or, “Are you and your party ready if the President appoints you to replace Minister A?”
Meanwhile, the presidential office itself has largely refrained from commenting, with the implicit message behind the government's stance amidst the public discourse likely being, “Just wait for the right time.” What is certain is that ministers still serving in the second United Indonesia Cabinet are expected to perform their duties diligently and remain unaffected by the reshuffle rumors.
The actions taken by Mr. SBY, as the nation's leader, are certainly worth observing. Fundamentally, we remain unaware of the true motivation behind this cabinet reshuffle, which has occurred more than two years into his leadership. If the reshuffle is genuinely seen as a normal process for evaluating ministerial performance, then we should support the President's decision.
However, if the reshuffle turns out to be merely a political stunt for image-building, especially if, as is now being suggested, it's a strategy for winning the upcoming election, then what does it say about placing an incompetent individual in a ministerial seat?
Our nation requires leaders who are experts in their respective fields. Furthermore, this beloved homeland needs leaders who work sincerely and diligently for the welfare of its people and the advancement of the nation. We do not need leaders who are simply the result of “pointing fingers here and there” and then perform their duties half-heartedly, only to later seek personal gain from their current positions.
If a matter is entrusted to someone who is not an expert, then expect its downfall.
We shall wait and see. Hope must not be abandoned. Hopefully, the upcoming reshuffle within the second United Indonesia Cabinet will steer this nation towards improvement.(Satrio)
