[caption id="attachment_8923" align="aligncenter" width="400"] Me with Rex Pemberton[/caption] Inspiration often comes from someone we admire. Yet, finding someone to admire isn't always easy. Many facets can spark admiration for an individual, such as their perspective, thoughts, behavior, words, or experiences.
From this admiration, inspiration then emerges, enlightening us to draw lessons and examples from them. One of the most impactful inspirers in my life is Rex Pemberton. For many, his name might be unfamiliar. But it's not only famous people who can inspire, is it? Back in 2011, I was given a golden opportunity to attend a workshop he led at an international event.
Held at an Oracle Corporation building in San Francisco, United States, I participated alongside five of my high school friends and other attendees from various countries and backgrounds. We were captivated by his incredible story. Initially, I thought just like you when I first heard the name Rex Pemberton. Who is he? What's so special about him? Cynical and somewhat dismissive questions popped into my head when the MC announced his name.
But when he stepped onto the stage, he immediately came down to greet everyone with a warm smile. He stood tall on his long legs, starting his talk with lighthearted jokes. He appeared incredibly confident leading the major event, attended by contingents from 10 countries, despite his relatively young age. He also didn't hesitate to engage with us, moving from table to table, ensuring every group had an equal chance to draw inspiration from him.
This was Rex Pemberton, a challenge enthusiast dubbed Australia's youngest conqueror of Mount Everest. At just 16, he successfully summited the Alps. He then saved hundreds of thousands of dollars to climb Mount Everest and the Seven Summits (the 7 highest mountain peaks in the world) by the age of 21. He recounted in detail his adventures navigating towering cliffs, treacherous ravines, and ferocious blizzards to reach the highest points on Earth.
Through his documentary, we witnessed this death-defying journey firsthand. Our hearts pounded relentlessly each time he described the harrowing conditions. Our breath often caught in our throats as obstacles demanded lives to be risked. His manner of speaking revealed the charisma of a true leader. He spoke English with a clear, confident Australian accent.
Even though jet lag was still affecting me, and drowsiness kept creeping in, I remained seated upright, absorbing every word he uttered. From his story, I gleaned countless insights and lessons. The first is courage. Courage is the essential asset for navigating every incline with inches of snow. It's also tested when traversing a bridge barely wider than a foot, with a deep chasm below – that's where one's mettle is truly proven to cross the cliff known as the "valley of death." The same principle applies to facing daily life's challenges.
We must bravely confront them and navigate them calmly. Don't be reckless, or we risk plummeting into the abyss of regret. Strong motivation coupled with hard work forms a potent combination that paves the way to our dreams. Moreover, Mr. Rex Pemberton's journey to the summit wasn't a solo endeavor. He and his friends formed a cohesive team with strong solidarity.
Despite his immense personal potential, he maintained that he couldn't achieve everything alone. Striving as part of a team generates greater strength than going it alone. Their solidarity was evident when a friend, suffering from hypothermia (a body disorder caused by extreme cold) and unable to continue, was embraced by the group to provide warmth.
Subsequently, as he couldn't proceed, he was brought back to base camp. What I took away from that workshop wasn't merely an exciting story or a thrilling film, but rather an inspiration that ignited a dream within me: to one day conquer mountain peaks myself. It was an inspiration to bravely take steps despite the inherent risks, to persevere through the onslaught of problems and obstacles without losing heart, and to dare to hold onto dreams and fight to achieve them, even if that dream hangs at an altitude of 8,848 meters on the highest peak of this planet.
